Message from the President and CEO

Dear Pancreatic Cancer Action Network Friends:

Near the end of 2010, we reached an exciting milestone in the history of our organization. Our Patient and Liaison Services, or PALS, program surpassed 50,000 pancreatic cancer patients and family members who have been served since its inception in 2002.

This figure represents a major accomplishment for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in which we all take great pride. You should feel proud as well: It is through your ongoing support that we have been able to sustain this highly-regarded, life-sustaining program that has helped so many individuals facing pancreatic cancer find crucial support, information and hope.

As you may know, the PALS program offers a toll-free, nationwide pancreatic cancer information line where patients, families and health professionals can receive free, personalized information and resources, as well as explanations of diagnosis and treatment options including clinical trials.

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network recommends that all patients consider clinical trials when exploring their treatment options and our PALS program is able to provide individualized clinical trial searches for anyone in need of such assistance. In addition, the program's Survivor and Caregiver Network offers connections with other survivors and caregivers to lend support, encouragement and hope to anyone facing the disease.

Those who call the PALS program are connected with dedicated, highly trained staff members called PALS Associates who provide patients and families with the help they need. Team members also work hard to increase the awareness and value of the program. Some conduct nationwide outreach efforts to inform healthcare professionals about the program's offerings. Other associates plan in-person educational events while others develop and manage the clinical trials database used to serve callers.

I commend the entire PALS team for the incredible contributions they make to our organization, the betterment of the PALS program and our patient community.

In closing, I would like to share a few of the comments we have received praising our PALS Associates and the program's offerings:
  • You are an oasis in an overwhelming world right now. Thank you.
  • Excellent publications that really give one the groundwork for a plan of attack. The quick turnaround in requesting and receiving information was extremely helpful!!
  • More informative than the hospital or the doctor. Excellent nutrition book!
  • Well trained, educated PALS Associates
  • Thank you so much for all the information. I will be researching it in hopes to find a trial that will accept me. Lots of useful material; I really appreciate it and it is a good start.
  • You explain a difficult subject clearly and completely.
  • Thank you so much for all of your support! I have passed this resource along to dad and know that this information will be really helpful to us in finding the best surgeon in his area.
  • Thank you for your informative and helpful email. I felt especially relieved to find the information sheet on second opinions. What a wonderful service you provide! Knowledge is power and you certainly help in that endeavor. It is also helpful to know that we can call with questions.
With gratitude and admiration,

Julie Fleshman, JD, MBA
